“Job hunting sucks”
“Interviews don’t let me BE myself”
“I’d rather stick needles in my eyeballs than do this again”
“It went ok but I don’t think they know the real me”
All phrases that I’ve heard recently and don’t worry the needles to eyeballs dude is all good, we calmed him down. It really does suck hunting for jobs doesn’t it?
It’s an exercise in self belief, confidence, we often take it too personally and all to find a place we spend a huge chunk of our life in, a place that allows us security, the bills to be paid and if we are really lucky a job that aligns with something we actually enjoy doing. Wait, did I just type ‘lucky’???
Job hunting is not about luck, we get what we give in life, as per the power of attraction what we expect to happen happens or as Henry Ford put it:
If you think you can, you can
If you think you can’t, you can’t
If you really want to find a job you enjoy then you have to be willing to explore yourself. When it comes to how the brain works the biggest factor is our ego, not the assumptive ‘oh you have a big ego’ (I do though), the ego is driven by the survival instinct part of our brain as a race humanity has not evolved as much as we think, we have just replaced hunting and foraging with work and life. Our defensive mechanisms rage when we are job hunting, it’s our fear factor which is why I referenced self belief and confidence earlier as we have a choice when looking for work, do you believe in ourselves enough to find a job YOU deserve or will you let your own brain push you to any job? Why does that even matter?
The first step of exploring self is literally having self awareness of your talents! Note the words talents not skills, they are two completely different wheelhouses. Skills for me are what the majority of people list on their resume:
I made my number
I delivered my 7p’s
I hit my metrics
I am dedicated
I am a team player
Ok, so far the resume is telling me your skills, I can put you in a box but this box is the same as everyone else and so I either reject interviewing based on the look of your resume or I interview you.
At this point you have missed the chance to BE yourself and to show your talents, what makes you tick, what do you enjoy and my biggest tip here is the smallest details matter. Let me give you a couple of personal examples:
I was 19, my resume stated under ‘Interests’
The rise of the Mafia 1930-1950’s
Every interview I went to asked me about this and I explained how my passion was the mass movement of behaviours and I thought of crime as like a heat map of changing culture. Came up in all 5 interviews, I got offered 3 jobs, all aligned to what I cared about.
I was 25, my resume stated under ‘Sales Director’
Part of the first group to go to India to examine call center expansion for the UK markets. My recommendation was not to expand there.
Oh this was massively against the mass thought, you see the UK put ALL of it call centers in India and over time pulled them all back because it failed. I was able to explain my concern was not skills, education, it was culture and overbearing control management control. I covered this in 3 interviews and got offered 1 job and 1 promotion.
First of all notes I didn’t get a 100% close rate, which is awesome! I very purposely put specifics into my resume for a few reasons:
1. If it doesn’t interest the interviewee then it’s not a good sign so I didn’t want the interview.
2. I wanted to show how I think beyond a job title and a blah blah job filled description that everyone else does.
3. I understand myself and what my emotional intelligence is
4. Fear factor was not an issue as I took my time in how I thought about my resume and had different versions for different job roles.
5. I frankly didn’t give a shit if they thought I was weird, I was happy to BE myself and let the right kind of job come to me (power of attraction).
Emotional Intelligence is your key to the door, it is easy to define because it is what you think about, it’s your passion, it’s the things you truly enjoy in work and life. Let your talent shine through and the interviews will become more fun, you will feel more like yourself and heck if being yourself doesn’t get you the job, it’s their lose not yours. You just have to rummage around your head and discover who you really are and guess what?
The interviewer need to show they are doing a good job themselves, give them your talents and make their decisions easy – Everybody wins!
